Amazon launches its India marketplace

The launch of its marketplace, offering books, movies and television shows for sale has commenced its operations.

“This marketplace will provide Indian customers with a shopping destination to purchase products from third-party sellers. India represents Amazon’s tenth marketplace launch,” the company said in a statement.

Unlike an e-commerce venture, in a marketplace, Indians will be allowed to operate as third-party sellers on Amazon’s marketplace, letting them list their products for sale to customers. It is unclear whether, at this point, this launch will pave the way for full-scale e-commerce operations.

“With the introduction of the marketplace and launch of two new programmes — ‘Sell on Amazon’ and ‘Fulfilment by Amazon’ — sellers across India now have access to unlimited and free ‘virtual shelf space’ and a scalable, pay-as-you-go fulfilment and customer service offerings,” said Amazon in a statement.

Amazon lists mobiles, cameras and more in the coming soon section. The company is also offering free home delivery for a limited time and cash on delivery. When the offer expires, orders above Rs. 500 will be home delivered.

Amazon had first tested the waters with the launch of its price comparison website —, which at the moment, still functions.

The company’s top executives had met Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma three months ago and had discussed the creation of a favourable policy environment for Amazon to do business in India.
