Benefits, Longevity and Life after IT Job

Man is the unique of the species on earth, which is born defenseless and of course as the most vulnerable one. There are literally no instinctive qualities. Neither does he know to swim on his own, nor can he speed away. No claws, fangs and stings. Born with no primal hair, he is even susceptible to minor temperature changes. Logically, one can conclude, such a species shall easily be extinct by the theory of Natural selection.

But even with all these adverse characters he succeeded to not only maintain his race, but dominate over the planet as the most powerful species who can manipulate the environment around him to cater his needs. The intelligence and reasoning capability in him keeps him distinguished from the rest of the living beings on earth. Tools have become the most indispensable invention in the evolution off human history. To rectify all the short comings of his nature, he invented tools and machines and got to do most of his work with it. This caused him to study the secrets of the laws of nature, thus we have universal laws and magics of number as we see today. Though the history of computation can be counted back to the Mesopotamian era, it was not until the 1930 that it laid the foundation stone of what we see today as the Information Technology[1]. Begun as a branch of mathematics by 1989, the domain has been rewriting all walks of life that existed till then. The explosion of data and human expertise in analysis and reasoning enhanced the development further thus leading to what we call the IT Boom, in other words a fusion explosion of information all over.

The impacts of the IT revolution in the human life could be enumerated into three major walks of life. The three elixir of sustenance

  • Business – Engine that powers the human affairs

  • Society – The vehicle

  • Learning – The Driver of Life

The topic of the day would be limited to the benefits and longevity of job opportunities in the industry. As the subject demands, the conclusive remark would talk on the scope of retirement life for the professionals in the domain.

Benefits would remain a benefit only if the fruits are assessed on a large scale and that would be something we would like to call as socio-economic benefit. Thus the benefit should be long lived so as to be tasted by the individuals of the society, at least majority, if not all of them. The article would first discuss the longevity of the IT jobs and then point to the benefits.

Longevity could be disputed in two streams

  1. The longevity of the IT Boom

  2. The longevity an individual can sustain in the domain, fruitfully

The first one has been the hot topic of debate for many of the magazines and intellectual meet ups, wherein they try to establish the golden era of the IT has come to an end. Though an exaggeration, The End of Corporate Computing by Nicholas Carl, a suggestive read in this aspect where he predicts an inevitable change to utility computing.[2] Here, if they mean that the era where one gets paid for doing nothing but reimplementing and reinventing the legacy stuffs have ended, then they are absolutely right, because that is exactly what the machines do. Otherwise the people make a grave mistake where they forget that as the IT industry evolves so does its supporting industries and other technologies. The traditional period of IT industry will be and should be replaced by a new era, which will always demand even more man power, more brains and bring in much more wealth and reforms. A simple example can be drawn from the introduction of GPUs and multi-core processors to the industry which simply called for major methodical changes, thus calling in solutions for many problems we put away earlier, because they were too expensive to be solved. So goes the business model, its partnerships.

Thus since the entire industry stands on knowledge which is an imperishable and something that can never be depleted, the golden era will continue to occur and saturate demanding an update or an evolution. At this one can say Man survived by developing skills. He now needs help to survive his skills.

The second, longevity an individual can actually serve in the industry. This is a highly subjective topic, that I feel is too early to be assessed. Being highly dependent on the interest, adaptability and capabilities and also the daily health, dietary and other habits of the individual. But, as a golden rule in every industry, when technology becomes obsolete, so does its master. Only that being a rapidly changing domain the exhaustion too is rapid. Even then, being a domain with its roots plunged into the mathematical foundations, it becomes less difficult for a person good at the fundamentals to keep himself in board with the ship. These risks do exist in any other opportunities regardless of the domain. Thus the future does not look as grim as it sounds, but just that a little toil would enlighten the horizon of the industry.

Coming back to the benefits, a few decades back, one could hardly imagine running his own business, just after his education. There was hardly any choice other than a pay cheque from the state, which was only for the very lucky gifted ones. Rest moved out to foreign lands in search of similar opportunities. Thanks to the IT industry, gone are the days where knowledge was evaluated on certificates. Gone are the days when business was affordable to those with wealth, as the commodity of sale here is mostly an idea or in other words, knowledge. We have serial entrepreneurs who start off zero and marks new records just ti break their own, all because they have the essential commodity, idea that sells. Thus the motto goes, if you do not have a job profile that suits you, then create one.

Second benefit that counts on the economic aspect would be the variance and diversification in the opportunities. A few decades earlier, there would be hardly 10-20 job profiles in a domain, that would s have candidates many hundred times the number of vacancies to compete. Job profiles today arise out of need, and in this highly dynamic industry one has no clue of what sort of a requirement would arise in the day to come. That leaves tonnes of choice for the engineers in the domain to excel and perform. The concept of job in the domain has become an art of expressing the best and getting the returns.

Socially, the professionals in this domain is able to gain a lot of self respect and dignity. This mainly is because that the sale commodity is none other than knowledge and intellect, which of course is not for sale unless the owner seriously wills to. There was a time when laborers where seen as servants and a lot of subjugation did occur from the employer. Not that the domain is completely just and fair. Forced labor and denial of rights do occur, but the extend and penetration of these malpractices have scaled down really low.

Second, the rigidity of cultural barriers have come down. It is a necessity for the professionals here to understand the cultural values of their clients wherever they are and honor the same. This indeed would let us realize the one world, one community concept which in fact would provide a tolerant constructive community. Unlike the past decades, we see the youth of the day work a lot in the constructive direction, putting away all differences of opinions for the sake of bigger cause, which is humanity. I believe this is the one benefit, why I say, the future of the generation lie in the advancement of this industry.

Retirement life is a necessity for many of us, while many others don’t see to it. If its economic security that one looks forth, I would say,irrespective of domains, the notion of security itself is a myth. A constructive life, is what every individual, as a responsible citizen should aim for. And a constructive life calls it to be constructive in all its phase. Pensions do provide economic security to the present generation, but prevent the upcoming generation to foster. The prosperity of retirement period in the IT industry very well depends on the way prosperity is being defined.

If one has not learned to earn on his own from 50 golden years of his life, the industry is no blame for the insecurity he feels. What I see as retirement and afterlife is the moment I begin to be an expert at what I love doing and also have the freedom for the same. I am very sure that IT industry is one such place where this can happen. Well, if its social service you look forth to do in return for the country that have given a lot to you, well no other place is as good as this. We can see numerous techs who even at their late years of life lead their ventures, well that shows the longevity and the fire that drives one even during the retirement, which is of course due to the dynamic drive in the domain.

Towards the end as a closure, a character in an old read says “We must use time as tool, not a crutch”[3] . I do not like to see the industry as a competitive rat race, where we hurry to excel above the rest. Irrespective of an individual’s presence, things will evolve and happen. Its only the mindset and readiness of the individual that distinguishes him as reaper of benefits, or a by stander in the domain. Let us not linger with time, rather run miles ahead of time, not to win the race, but to be the part of the evolution.
