Beyond the wall

Once upon a time there was a village,
Whose borders were sealed with a stone wall.
No one  knew when the wall was built,
And no one knew what lay beyond the wall.

Brave ones in the village tried to climb the wall,
But the climb went on and on to infinity.
Lo and behold they gave up the climb,
And settled for their mundane lives.

One day a villager dreamt of huge mountains,
That circled the wall and protected the village.
The village lauded the man as a prophet,
And and they sang praises for the eternal mountains.

Elders of the village banned the skeptics,
From questioning the existence of the mountain,
To protect the feelings of the prophet’s followers,
Who called themselves the “Mountainists”.

Another man dreamt that there was an ocean,
Which circled the walls and nurtured the village.
He became the high priest of mother ocean,
And his followers were called the “Oceanists”.

Debates errupted in the village town hall,
Between the mountainists and oceanists.
Though both groups claimed they stood for love,
They kept hurting each other’s feelings.

There was a tramp girl who lived by the country side,
Who asked questions about the truth beyond the wall.
She declared aloud that there was no proof,
For the eternal mountains or the nurturing ocean.

Villagers called the girl the “Scientist”,
And urged her to stop asking questions.
Mountainists and oceanists warned her alike,
That she would rot in hell.

The tramp girl made up her mind to seek the truth.
She filled her backpack and started the climb.
Rain drenched her and sunlight burned her.
But the tramp girl continued the climb.

Down in the village the situation turned bad,
As the mountainists and oceanists clashed.
Debates gave way to violent fights,
And then to a full scale war.

The tramp girl still continues her climb with zeal,
Knowing more about the wall every day.
Though she knows the truth is far away,
She knows her purpose is to climb.
