Data of many kinds is being rapidly generated in all walks of life. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in particular are becoming widely used in industry, research, and even the public sector to make sense of this data deluge. But in many cases, the data often contains hidden patterns or structure that needs to be parsed out before one can apply ML. Through several examples - and lots of pictures - we will see how tools from Mathematics can help us find such patterns. We will also point to open-source software packages implementing these tools.
